The Research Center Ocean Margins (RCOM) at University of Bremen is one of the world-leading institutions for marine geosciences. The infrastructure features a unique set of state-of-the-art research facilities necessary for multidisciplinary studies. We are searching for enthusiastic and dynamic individuals with a strong background in different fields of marine geosciences. Call for Applications: 2006 BP Conservation Programme Awards

           The aim of BP Conservation Programme Awards is to contribute to long-term environmental conservation and sustainable development in priority areas by encouraging and engaging potential leaders in biodiversity conservation, and providing opportunities for them to gain practical skills and experience.

           This initiative, organised by BirdLife International, Conservation International, Fauna & Flora International, the Wildlife Conservation Society and BP, has been helping young conservationists across the world to achieve their goals for the past 15 years. The Programme currently works towards its aims by offering advice, training and awards, primarily targeting university students.

           This year we have a new application procedure, as well as new criteria. The Programme has been working to develop an even stronger programme to align with our goal to build leadership capacity for sustainable development across the world, with 2006 serving as a transition year. We are testing some new approaches and procedures in order to increase efficiency and maintain good quality support for those applying and winning awards.

           Three types of awards will be offered in 2006:


           a.. Future Conservationist Awards: Approximately 20 awards of up to $12,500 each, plus training.
           a.. Conservation Follow-up Awards: Approximately 5 awards of up to $25,000 each, plus training. Available to previous BPCP award winners only.
           a.. Conservation Leadership Awards: 2 awards of $50,000 each, plus training. Available to previous BPCP award winners only.
           These three tiers allow progression from encouraging and supporting inexperienced teams undertaking small-scale, basic surveying and awareness-raising projects, to the stage where teams are engaging in more complex decision-making, and developing stronger communication and leadership skills.

           The application deadline is 16th December 2005 for ALL applications, and awards will be announced mid-March 2006. All details, including new guidelines and application forms, are now available on the BPCP website!

           All teams submitting an application receive feedback on their proposal and advice on other sources of funding regardless of whether or not they are granted an award. The sooner applications are received prior to the December 16th deadline, the more opportunity we have to review these initial proposals and get them back to applicants with feedback, allowing time for improvement before they submit a final proposal.

           For Future Conservationist Awards, applicants must fulfill the following eligibility criteria (further criteria are included in the guidelines, which can be downloaded from the website):


           a.. Teams must include only members less than 35 years of age with no more than two years professional conservation experience.
           a.. Projects must address a recognised international biodiversity conservation priority at the species or site level.
           a.. Projects must take place outside countries that have ratified the Convention on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Visit www.oecd.org for a list.
           a.. Projects that are specifically for PhD research or Master's dissertations will not be supported.

PROGRAMA INICIATIVA PARA ESPECIES AMENAZADAS (IEA)
BECAS “WERNER HANAGARTH”
Fundación PUMA, a través de una alianza estratégica con Conservación
Internacional - Bolivia (CI), une esfuerzos para ejecutar el programa
“Iniciativa para Especies Amenazadas”, mismo que busca contribuir a
minimizar la pérdida de biodiversidad y aumentar el conocimiento sobre
dichas especies en los Andes Tropicales (Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú
y Bolivia).

Esta iniciativa tiene el propósito de valorar las especies amenazadas
monitorear su estado actual, diseñar planes de acción para su conservación e
implementación a largo plazo.

ACTIVIDADES A SER FINANCIADAS
Las actividades elegibles por el Programa son: tesis de grado postgrado,
investigaciones y acciones innovadoras de conservación de especies
amenazadas categorizadas bajo los criterios de UICN, como en peligro critico
(CR), en peligro (EN), vulnerable (VU) y con datos insuficientes (DD).

Las actividades, deben estar dirigidas a:

*
Generar información científica esencial para el manejo y conservación de la
biota amenazada en Bolivia que satisfaga, en diferentes aspectos, los vacíos
existentes.
*
Contemplar acciones de investigación, manejo in situ y ex situ de los
remanentes de población, fortalecimiento de áreas protegidas, actividades de
educación y capacitación ambiental.
*
Disponer de una base sólida de información científica (historia natural de
la especie focal y causas de su declinación)
*
Contemplar acciones para atenuar o disminuir las amenazas para estas
especies; e identificar técnicas de manejo para incrementar sus poblaciones.

ÁREAS TEMATICAS PRIORIZADAS: Debido a la situación critica del estado de
conservación de anfibios y micromamiferos, se dará prioridad a propuestas
dirigidas a estos grupos.

BENEFICIARIOS ELEGIBLES
Son considerados beneficiarios de la financiación, tesistas e investigadores
independientes o asociados, personas naturales autodidactas con reconocida
experiencia, miembros de comunidades indígenas que con tutoría profesional
garanticen el desarrollo de los objetivos planteados en sus propuestas.

No podrán presentarse a esta convocatoria personas que fueron beneficiadas
en convocatorias anteriores.

Los postulantes deberán presentar el aval de una institución académica u
otra organización.

RECURSOS DISPONIBLES

*
El monto de financiación por cada beca se encuentra entre U$S 1.000.00 hasta
un máximo de U$S 2.500.00
*
Las solicitudes deberán ser presentadas a través de nota formal, adjuntando
el formulario de solicitud correspondiente.

Convocatoria para Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia y Perú
Gracias a una contribución generosa de parte de la Fundacion Gordon y Betty
Moore, el programa Education for Nature (EFN) ofrecerá Becas Russell E.
Train para postgrados en conservación para individuos de Bolivia, Colombia,
Ecuador y Perú. Las becas serán ofrecidas en los años 2005, 2006 y 2007 y
financiarán estudios de postgrado en cualquier país del mundo para
conservacionistas y estudiantes que estén trabajando en la vertiente
oriental de los Andes y Amazonía. El apoyo financiero consistirá en el pago
de matrículas, libros, viaje de ida y vuelta a la institución de estudios,
alojamiento, comida y el desarrollo de investigaciones. Las becas apoyaran
estudios por un máximo de dos años.

FECHA LIMITE DE ENTREGA
1 de marzo de 2006 para estudios que comiencen entre enero y junio 2006 o
estudiantes que ya estén matriculados

ELEGIBILIDAD
Para ser candidato a las becas EFN debe ajustarse a los siguientes
criterios:

* Ser ciudadano o residente legal permanente del uno de los países
elegibles.
* Debe tener al menos 2 años de experiencia en actividades de conservación
(incluidas actividades voluntarias).
* Debe haber postulado, ser admitido, o estar matriculado en la institución
académica en la que desea cursar la maestría o doctorado al momento de
someter su solicitud para la beca de estudio.
* Debe comprometerse a trabajar por lo menos dos años después de la
culminación de sus estudios en su país o en la vertiente oriental de los
Andes y Amazonía.
* Sus estudios deberán corresponder a una de las disciplinas de las ciencias
naturales o sociales con énfasis en la conservación de la vertiente oriental
de los Andes y Amazonía. Se le dará prioridad a los individuos que estén
trabajando o conduciendo investigaciones científicas aplicadas a la
conservación, trabajando en temas relacionados con la creación y manejo de
las áreas protegidas (IUCN I-IV, territorios indígenas, reservas
extractivistas, extracción forestal sostenible y áreas de conservación
privadas) y aspectos de economía y políticas ambientales en la vertiente
oriental de los Andes y Amazonía. Las disciplinas permitidas y el área
prioridad de los Andes-Amazonas están al final del anuncio.

SELECCION
Los ganadores de las becas Train se seleccionan por medio de un proceso
competitivo basado en méritos. En cada país reúne un panel independiente e
interdisciplinario de expertos para revisar las solicitudes e identificar
los mejores candidatos basándose en el siguiente criterio:

* Calificaciones profesionales como prueba de los cargos anteriores y
actuales en tema de conservación, referencias de los colegas en el campo,
publicaciones y otras fuentes.
* Liderazgo por medio de la participación en actividades voluntarias y
comunitarias, actividades en el lugar de trabajo, en el gobierno local y
nacional y en otras áreas.
* Logros académicos anteriores demostrados por medio de calificaciones,
premios académicos, referencias de los maestros y profesores y otros.
* Motivación y compromiso para contribuir a la conservación en un país
participante y compartir lo que se aprenda con otros en su campo y en su
comunidad.
